I'm watching Star Wars Episode IV and plan to watch Eps. V and VI as well. I am wondering about the droids. I suspect that C3PO's memory was wiped after the birth of Luke and Leia, so that he wouldn't remember Anakin and Padme. I can't tell if R2's memory is wiped however, but I suspect it was as well. I am also wonder why Obi Wan doesn't remember them (I would guess it's because Episode IV was made before I, II, and III, but it may have a more "official" explanation). How did the two of them end up with Leia, story-wise? This has probably been covered in the books, but I don't read those.
It has been covered in the books but only in the EU (Expanded Universe of books) not the novel versions of the movies. The novel versions of the OT (ep IV - ep VI) are not even worth reading as they don't reflect the changes made with the prequels and in fact were horrid representations of the movies even when they were written.
Pretty much all of this is because the OT was made first. You have to remember just how much the story has changed over the years. When ep IV was made Anakin Skywalker & Darth Vader were two completely different characters not one. Luke & Leia were NOT twins let alone siblings and the history of the two droids was not known. In the early bios of C3po he was NOT built by Anakin but rather was about 150 years old at the time of the OT. The changes made by the decision to combine the characters of Anakin & Vader, to make Luke & Leia twins, Anakin actually being the one who "built" C3po and all the other changes made by Lucas have made questions like this much harder to answer and understand. Quite literally Obi-Wan doesn't seem to remember the droids because at that point in the story development Obi-Wan had never met the droids. This leads to a lot of speculation about it with what we have learned from the prequels ... mostly was he only pretending to not know the droids or not. Another little tidbit that can be taken two ways with Obi-Wan. When he "rescues" Luke from the Sandpeople he says at one point "Hurry ... they're on the move" ... was he talking about the Sandpeople or was he talking about the Stormtroopers. In truth, given the whole of the story we now know, it is very far fetched that a Jedi Master of Obi-Wan's power would not have sensed the presence of a Dark Lord of the Sith of Vader's power when he entered the Tatooine system. By the same token it seems like Vader should have been able to sense a Jedi Master of Obi-Wan's power on the planet although in the book "The Rise and Fall of Darth Vader" we see his intense dislike of the planet Tatooine so that may have been masking Obi-Wan's presence. The events of the prequels have made the events of the OT seem to have two different means in a way leaving us to bang our heads against the wall trying to figure some of them out.
As for how the droids came to end up with Leia, the others are somewhat right but not completely. At the end of ep III Bail Organa entrusts the droids to the captain of the Blockade Runner Tantiv IV, Captain Antillies (No relation to Wedge Antillies). Bail tells him to treat them well and to have the protocol droid's memory wiped. R2D2 never has a memory wipe. In the book series titled the "Dark Nest Trilogy", set about 30 years after the events of ep VI we learn a whole bunch about little R2. He was a prototype droid and one of the first R2 series of astromech droids. He also had the ability to isolate certain parts of their internal programing so that it couldn't be touched in a memory wipe. It is in this book series that Luke & Leia finally learn who their mother is.
